Surprises in Savannah
White Paper, Balsa Wood, Printed Paper
13"x11"x1.5"

For this project, I was inspired by an anniversary trip to Savannah, GA. Savannah is famous for its 22 historic squares so I wanted to emphasize the geometric layout that is prominent in the city. I used layers of square shapes for the squares, semi-circles for the fountains of the squares, horizontal and vertical lines for the streets, and organic lines for the Savannah River.

I decided to use white paper without color so it was easier to see the shadows cast by the overlapping patterns. The layers of paper are mounted on strips of balsa wood to add depth to the artwork. We spent most of the trip trying to see as many squares as possible while sightseeing without an itinerary which is why the sculpture seems chaotic yet unified.
