A Natural History Of The Senses - Kissing

“We don’t just kiss romantically, of course; we also kiss dice before we roll them, kiss our own hurt finger or that of a loved one, kiss a religious symbol or statue, kiss the flag of our homeland or the ground itself, kiss a good-luck charm, kiss a photograph, kiss the king’s or bishop’s ring, kiss our own fingers to signal farewell to someone.” - Diane Ackerman, A Natural History Of The Senses

A kiss can convey a multitude of different meanings. A kiss can be a blessing, a wish, a hope, a cure, a prayer, a message, as well as a token of love. Through this collage, I wanted to portray several different meanings of kisses through the same, simple gesture. I used multi-media paper, 5 shades of red lipstick, a photo of my great grandmother, a cross necklace, a ring, and a pair of dice. Each item represents good luck, memories, blessings, and love.
